Making A DIY Floor Lamp

By JohanB

A great way to personalize home decor is with a do it yourself project. A DIY floor lamp is a project that is not overly complicated and yet can really add a unique flavor to a room.

An old antique lampshade on a brass stand lamp giving off a warm glowUsing natural wood for the stand and twine for the shade will give a great completed look and is simple enough that even a first timer can have the project come out looking terrific. The items needed for this project are:

  • hot glue gun
  • wire cutters
  • lamp kit from any home center
  • roll of twine
  • sixteen-inch drum lampshade
  • 2″x2″x6.6′ piece of wood
  • drill
  • wood glue
  • shelf support
  • 2″x2″x26″ piece of wood
  • four 1″x1″x16″ pieces of wood

Start with the 4 sixteen inch wood pieces for the base of the lamp to go around the 6 1/2 foot lamp stand. Use a pen or pencil to mark where the screw holes will go for each piece of the base.

The first mark is for the upright stand and then the second is lined up with the base piece that will butt up against it. Vary the positions of each mark slightly so that the screws themselves will not hit each other.

The hole will then need to be drilled. Attach the base pieces to the diy floor lamp stand and with wood screws and washers attach them to each other.

About four inches will be needed to extend off the back when the 26-inch piece of wood is positioned on the top. Drill holes for the screws prior to adding wood glue to the top of the lamp and then screw the arm to the stand.

To attach the bracket to the under part of the lamp arm the drill holes should be marked. The hole for the lamp arm where it meets the lamp arm base will need to be drilled. The wiring will then need to be run through the hole and the top of the arm piece.

The twine will be applied by using the hot glue to the top of the shade. It is then a simple matter of repeating the process until the entire shade is covered with the twine.

When making this floor lamp, wood of any finish can be used, and a finish that complements the room is recommended. Many like leaving the wood unfinished to give it that do it yourself look and feel.

This project should be able to be completed in a single day. Those with enough experience with similar projects will likely be able to finish a project like this one in a matter of a couple of hours. This is a great project to give a room something that is unique to the one who made it.
